If you are a miner, you may be familiar with Bitmain. They have built roughly seventy percent of the computing power the bitcoin network has been built on. They produce specialized chips to perform hash function while mining and exchanging Bitcoins and packages them inside their devices, such as the Antminer S9.
It seems like CEO Jihan Wu is looking to expand the companies ventures beyond cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. They are beginning to look into artificial intelligence. They have announced their plan to develop a new AI chip, called Sophon BM1680, and will begin selling systems based on their invention.
They company says that the chip will be specialized for training and executing deep learning algorithms. According to the specifications, the BM1680 uses 32-bit floating point math, it can perform 2 teraflops (2 trillion operations per second), and use about 40W when running maxed out.
The company is in talks with Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent while in their development phase.
